Diamond RiverCamp

September to March

A few steps from the river, in the deep shade of the Black Karee trees is the tranquillity of the Diamond River Camp.

The concession lies on 38km of the Lower Vaal River on a 40 000ha Nature Reserve. Offering a number of activities, including; game drives and tours of the Bushman fountain where you can view thousands of ancient petroglyphs, to name a few.

The fishing is simply exceptional; the location and river bed structure mean that the water flows are unusually clear, making sight fishing to large fish possible. The numbers of Yellowfish in this area are spectacular! Combined with little to no pressure, you are sure to be spoilt by the number and quality of fish.

There are a number of special spots on the concession, including an incredible 1km’s of shallow riffle water, offering anglers the opportunity to target shoals of yellows that congregate here. Uncommon in most locations on the Vaal are the wide grassy banks that make fly fishing from the bank a reality, this is great for anglers who are not comfortable with wading. Game roams freely on the reserve, encounters with Kudu, Giraffe and a host of other wildlife is not unusual on the lush riverbanks – an oasis in the arid veld.

Great food and a dedicated team sets this camp apart. The entire camp is built for each group of guests, with large dome safari tents, comfortable beds and eco-friendly facilities, keeping with the vision of the camp and reserve. We aim to make use of this unique resource with as little impact as possible.

We look forward to sharing this true gem with our guests.

Groot Marico

September to March

When dropping down the steep valley road, you can feel time warp, taking you to days of illicit spirits and a poetic past.

The walls of the old farm house have seen and heard it all; the creativity, the prosperity and the tranquillity. So too have the original inhabitants of the Groot Marico River; the Large Scale Yellowfish.

We discovered these fish early on, but it took several seasons to figure out their habits and preferences. Big fish cruise the slow, shadowy pools in search of morsels on the surface. A well-timed and perfectly presented hopper will, in most cases, grab their attention.

The speed at which these golden wizards can inhale and exhale a fly must be seen to be believed; instant reactions are required to get a good hook set. A 3-4 weight rod with a double taper floating line is the ideal setup for fishing the Groot Marico.

Only 20km from the Marico Eye, this water is pure. The flow of the river remains constant, barring a major storm which is common in summer, providing great fishing through the warmer months.

There are beautiful hikes, bike rides and venues to sample the local culture and produce. After a day’s fishing in the cool waters, the evening is spent around the fire, often with drum and dram. A typical Argentine style Asado at the boma will get your campfire juices flowing, ready for the day of fishing ahead.

The Groot Marico is a magical place, sure to seduce you into its laid back rhythm.
