Diamond River, Week 6

28 Nov 2023 to
2 Dec 2023

Even a blind Squirrel finds a nut once in a while! This was one of the funniest and most exciting trips we have ever had. We were joined by a bunch of guys from Joburg and Rustenburg who were scheduled to fish with us in the previous two seasons but had been pushed out due to the floods. The weather had finally given us a gap and the guys managed to get down and do the long awaited pilgrimage.

We have had a bunch of new fly fishers this season and this trip was nothing new. The result though was awesome! The fishing on this trip was absolutely fantastic, there were fish in huge numbers and they were not shy of the fly and specifically the dry. We had 3 days of incredible smiles and the most epic stories coming back from the water.

Mike in particular was on fire, every time he touched the rod, another stonking fish came to the net. It took him a while to believe how subtle a yellowfish can be when it eats the nymph but after the 5th “rock” turned into a really good yellow, he was a convert!

Mikes Brother, Justin, had never touched a fly rod before and by the end of the first day he was casting 2/3 of a fly line! He is a natural fisherman and made the most of this fishery catching fish in every possible manner, from Nymph to Streamers he did it all. including sight fishing grass carp on dry fly!

The highlight of the trip however was again with Mike. Him and Edd had headed in the late evening to a spot that Edd had seen some fish feeding the previous evening. They had planned on getting to the spot at sunrise with a hopper tied that morning specifically for that purpose. After pinning a couple of beauties on the hopper in the dying light, mike hooked an absolute dinosaur on the dry that took him deep onto the backing. After an intense fight, Mike and Edd managed to land the beauty! truly a once in a lifetime fish that we all had the privilege of seeing in the flesh! As Mike said after every big fish he landed “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while”!
